2001 Synod Assembly
Abortion Resolution Failed
A resolution failed that would have asked the
Churchwide Assembly to limit abortion coverage under the ELCA health care plan.
Currently the plan does not ask about the details regarding the circumstances
surrounding a terminated pregnancy.
The resolution, 2001-14, would have memorialized
the assembly to direct the Board of Pensions to enact regulations that would
limit coverage to those pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, where the
embryo or fetus has lethal abnormalities incompatible with life, or where the
life of the mother is threatened. Understandably, debate was passionate.
