Resolution 2004-01: A Renewed Vision
for Missionary Sponsorship in the Southeastern Minnesota Synod
Passed
WHEREAS, the primary task given to the church by Jesus is to "make disciples
of all nations" (Matt. 28:19); and
WHEREAS, the ELCA Division for
Global Mission's (DGM) policies and vision statements include evangelizing
and nurturing the birth and growth of new Christian communities, as well as
accompanying already established mission outposts; and
WHEREAS, the Missionary
Sponsorship Program of the ELCA is an established and effective means of
enabling specific congregations to assist in the support of specific
missionaries, while developing a personal relationship with them; and
WHEREAS, 61 congregations of
the Southeastern Minnesota Synod are currently supporting the Missionary
Sponsorship Program, raising funds of $165,779 of direct missionary support
in 2002;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that
the Southeastern Minnesota Synod establish a goal of raising our synod-wide
contribution to the Missionary Sponsorship Fund of the ELCA to $200,000 for
the year 2005; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that
the Southeastern Minnesota Synod Global Mission/Companion Synods Committee
develop a plan to invite additional congregations to participate in the
Missionary Sponsorship Program of the ELCA.
