2005 Synod Assembly

Resolution 2005-06:

Is the ELCA on the Wrong Road?

The Assembly voted to not consider this resolution.

WHEREAS, Jeremiah 8:4-9 states: "You shall say to them, Thus says the Lord: When people fall, do they not get up again? If they go astray, do they not turn back? Why then has this people turned away in perpetual backsliding? They have held fast to deceit, they have refused to return. I have given heed and listened, but they do not speak honestly; no one repents of wickedness, saying, 'what have I done!' All of them turn to their own course, like a horse lunging headlong into battle. Even the stork in the heavens knows its times; and the turtledove, swallow, and crane observe the time of their coming; but my people do not know the ordinance of the Lord. How can you say, 'We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us,' when, in fact, the false pen of the scribes has made it into a lie?"; and

WHEREAS, the ELCA constitution states in the confession of faith chapter 2, page 19, paragraph 2.03; "This church accepts the canonical scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God and the authoritative source and norm of its proclamation, faith and life."; and

WHEREAS, the Scriptures tell us to go out into the socioeconomic world of today; rebuke the sinners, help them and ourselves to repent of our sinful ways and abide in Jesus Christ our Lord. Leviticus 19:17-18 states: "You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord."; and

WHEREAS, nowhere in the Bible is it stated that a church has the choice or the right to pick which sins are bad, OK or good; as all sins are wrong;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that we continue to pray the ELCA will stay on the road of truth in the scriptures as our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through the help of the Holy Spirit has shown us. AMEN. Timothy 4:1-5 states: "In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable; convince, rebuke and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully."

Presented to the Blue Earth River Conference Assembly on 2/13/05, NOT approved.
