Resolution 2005-11:
Southeastern Minnesota Synod's
Reaction to the Recommendations of the Church Council
Failed
WHEREAS, the seventh Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in America, meeting in August 2001, directed this church 1) to study
homosexuality with reference to two issues -- the blessing of same-sex
unions and the ordination, consecration, and commissioning of people in
committed same-sex unions; and 2) to develop a social statement on
sexuality; and WHEREAS,
the Church Council of the ELCA, meeting in April 2005, received the results
of this sexuality study, and has made recommendations regarding this study
to the ninth Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America, meeting in August 2005; and
WHEREAS, these recommendations will be voted upon by the ninth Churchwide
Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, meeting in August
2005; and
WHEREAS, the Southeastern
Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America desires to
learn the reaction of its members gathered in Synod Assembly, meeting in May
2005, to the recommendations of the Church Council of the ELCA; and
WHEREAS, the Southeastern Minnesota Synod
desires to share with the ninth Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America a sense of the synod's reaction to the
recommendations of the Church Council;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that
the Southeastern Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America, meeting in May 2005, record the response, pro and con, to each of
the three recommendations submitted by the Church Council regarding
the sexuality studies; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that
the Southeastern Minnesota Synod memorialize the ninth Churchwide Assembly
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to receive as information the
record of response, pro and con, to each of the three recommendations
submitted by the
Church Council.
