2005 Synod Assembly
Colombian Bishop Speaks, Resolutions Discussed at
Second Plenary
(Live Update added 2:45 p.m., Friday, May 6,
2005)
The Rev. Sijifredo Buitrago,
bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Colombia, spoke briefly this
afternoon at the start of the Assembly's Second Plenary.
Buitrago, who was accompanied
by his wife and a translator, acknowledged the prayers and gifts from the
Southeastern Minnesota Synod. He thanked the synod for its help, and said he
hopes the churches can continue their friendly relationship.
The first resolutions of the
18th annual Southeastern Minnesota Synod Assembly were then considered.
The first item considered by
attendants was resolution 2005-01, titled "Justice for the Poor Through Fair
Trade." The resolution directs local congregations to support fair trade
standards by purchasing and using Equal Exchange products. No one spoke
against resolution 2005-01, and it passed.
The second item scheduled for
consideration was withdrawn. Resolution 2005-02, titled "New Mission Starts
in the Southeastern Minnesota Synod," was withdrawn by the author.
The third item considered by
voting members was resolution 2005-03, titled "New Mission Starts in the
ELCA." The resolution asks the ELCA's national assembly to call upon each
synod to develop and redevelop congregations. One person moved to make a
friendly amendment that would encourage synods to "identify and raise up"
mission leaders. The resolution was amended. One person spoke against the
resolution because it could place an unfair burden on some congregations.
One person spoke against the resolution because there are other ways to draw
people into worship. The resolution passed as amended.
Additional discussion of
resolutions was postponed to allow previously scheduled activities to occur.
Discussion of proposed resolutions is scheduled to resume later today.
