2005 Synod Assembly
Final Resolutions Discussed
at Fourth Plenary

Discussion of resolutions
continued Saturday afternoon at the 18th annual Southeastern Minnesota Synod
Assembly.
The eighth item considered by
the voting members was Resolution 2005-06,
titled "Is the ELCA on the Wrong Road?" One person objected to consideration
of the resolution. No debate was allowed, according to Assembly Rules &
Procedures. The objection, which needed two-thirds vote to be sustained,
succeeded.
Resolution 2005-06 was removed
from consideration.

The ninth item considered by
the voting members was Resolution 2005-11,
titled "Southeastern Minnesota Synod's Reaction to the Recommendations of
the Church Council." One person moved to include the resolution, which was
submitted late, among Assembly discussion. No debate was allowed, according
to Assembly Rules & Procedures. The motion succeeded.
One person moved to amend the
resolution so that voting members considered only recommendations two and
three. One person spoke against the amendment because the person felt that
consideration of the first recommendation is important. The amendment
failed.
One person moved to amend the
resolution so that voting members also considered the recommendation's two
dissenting positions put forth by the task force. One person spoke against
the amendment because that person said it was unnecessary. One person spoke
for the amendment because many people support considering the dissenting
positions. One person spoke for the amendment because the multiple votes
will better advise the national assembly. One person spoke against the
amendment because it would be better considered as a separate resolution.
The amendment failed.
One person spoke against the
resolution because it influences national assembly. Another person spoke
against the resolution because that person said the vote called for within
the resolution is impromptu and inappropriate.
A motion was made to end
discussion. No debate was allowed, according to Assembly rules and
procedures. The motion to end discussion, which needed two-thirds vote to be
sustained, succeeded.
A vote was then taken on
Resolution 2005-11. The resolution failed.

The tenth item considered by
the voting members was Resolution 2005-12,
titled "Further Study of Renewing Worship Hymnal." One person motioned to
include the resolution, which was submitted late, among Assembly discussion.
No debate was allowed, according to Assembly Rules & Procedures. The motion
failed.

The eleventh item considered
by the voting members was Resolution 2005-10,
titled "2006 Minimum Compensation and Benefits Guidelines." One person spoke
against the resolution because it could appear to give too much
compensation. The resolution passed.

The twelfth item considered by
the voting members was Resolution 2005-08,
titled "New Ministry Emphasis Sunday." One person spoke for the resolution
because mission starts "are a new and exciting way" to reach people. Another
person spoke for the resolution because it will help start new
congregations. The resolution passed.

The thirteenth and final item
considered by the voting members was Resolution
2005-09, titled "Advocate for Poor and Working Poor Neighbors." One
person spoke against the resolution because it tried to "bite off more than
it can chew." One person spoke for the resolution because it is the
responsibility of the church to "look out for those in need." Another person
spoke for the resolution because the person said the demonstrated need for
this assistance is great. Still another person spoke for the resolution
because it is a non-partisan way to provide assistance.
A motion was made to end
discussion. No debate was allowed, according to Assembly rules and
procedures. The motion to end discussion, which needed two-thirds vote to be
sustained, succeeded.
A vote was then taken on
Resolution 2005-09. The resolution passed.
