After months of
preparation by the planning committee, synod staff and other committees, the
19th Annual Southeastern Minnesota Synod Assembly opened with 538
in attendance. Carolyn Goulet, coordinator of Assembly registration shared
that 580 voters pre-registered.
The theme of this year’s
assembly is “Called into God’s Marvelous Light … By the Word.” The 2006
Assembly will focus on Bible Study with twenty different choices available
for voting members to attend during the breakout sessions. These bible study
sessions are lead by pastors from the Southeastern Minnesota Synod.
Professor Craig Koester
will lead the keynote Bible studies for the full assembly. Rev. Koester is a
professor of New Testament at Luther Seminary.
Rev. Michael Burke, the
Executive for Worship and Liturgical Resources is the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America representative. He will further explain the
interrelationship between the Bible and Lutheran Worship on Saturday.
Jan Syverson has been the
Assembly manager for around fifteen years. “Each year (the planning) is
different with each with its own challenges. This year the big challenge was
audio and video and making sure all the connections are working.” The
challenges continued into the first plenary. Jan shared that anyone wanting
to join the planning committee for next year’s assembly should note that on
the evaluation form.
Bishop Harold Usgaard,
bishop of the Southeastern Minnesota Synod said the main thing he wants us
to bring away from this assembly is that we need to refocus on scripture. “I
want us to remember how important scripture is to all Lutherans. We need to
continue to study the scripture.”
