2006 Synod Assembly
Celebration of
accomplishments is the theme of the Second Plenary
By Peg Mowery
The first item on the
agenda for the Second Plenary was the awarding of The Servant of Christ
Award to Zumbro Lutheran Church Rochester. Zumbro is recognized by Lutheran
Social Services for their supporting partnership.
The nominating committee
noted that nominations were printed in the report and were not read. New
would be accepted throughout the day with voting on Saturday. It was noted
that this year there are high school and young adults attending the 2007
Churchwide Assembly as voting members. These students were selected by the
Conference of Deans and will be voted on with the rest of the nominees.
The first Resolution 2006
– 01 to be considered by the assembly is titled “New Ministry Emphasis
Sunday.” The tradition has been established to set a date for an annual New
Ministry Emphasis on Transfiguration Sunday to be set aside by the
congregations in Southeastern Minnesota Synod to recognize and support the
New Mission Start congregations in our synod. Glory to God, Rochester and
Rejoice! Northfield are new ministry starts in SEMN Synod. The Mission and
Planning Team of the synod will allocate the funds collected according to
their needs. No one contested the resolution and it was passed.
Good Earth Village and Southeastern Minnesota
Synod have partnered together to receive two grants from Thrivent Financial
for Lutherans. One of the grants for $97,825 is for a Senior High Servant
Leadership program to be coordinated by Good Earth Village to help youth
learn and develop practical skills for service-oriented ministry.
Another grant for
$80,000 is to start a program for charitable giving. The grant has enabled
Rev. Lester Horntvedt to be hired to lead the Charitable Giving program.
This program “Leadership for the Church: Today and Tomorrow” will focus on
educating and encouraging individuals to consider how they might best
financially support the ministries of their congregation.
