2006 Synod Assembly
Resolution 2006-04:
In Thanksgiving for 100 Years of
Lutheran Campus Ministry
Passed as
amended
1 WHEREAS,
Lutheran Campus
2 Ministry will celebrate its
3 centennial anniversary in the
4 United States during 2007, the first
5 campus pastor, Howard Gold,
6 having been called to the
7 University of Wisconsin, Madison
8 in 1907; and
9 WHEREAS,
Lutheran Campus
10 Ministry began at Winona State
11 University in 1941, founded by
12 members of Central Lutheran
13 Church, a congregation of this
14 Root River Conference, and the
15 Southeastern Minnesota Synod;
16 and
17 WHEREAS, the
Southeastern
18 Minnesota Synod of the ELCA is
19 blessed with two, full-time campus
20 ministries, (Mankato and Winona);
21 and
22 WHEREAS,
Lutheran Campus
23 Ministry of Minnesota is blessed
24 to have ten professionally staffed
25 ministry sites (Minneapolis/St.
26 Paul, Morris, Duluth, Mankato, St.
27 Cloud, Moorhead, Bemidji,
28 Winona, Marshall, and Willmar);
29 and
30 WHEREAS,
Lutheran Campus
31 Ministry, among its many
32 contributions to the church, is a
33 primary arena for identifying,
34 encouraging, and equipping future
35 leaders of the Church, including
36 those who will enter rostered
37 leadership and those who will
38 serve congregations as council
39 members, officers, worship
40 leaders, and teachers; and
41 WHEREAS,
Lutheran Campus
42 Ministry is an integral mission of
43 our church to the highly
44 unchurched young adult
45 population on campus, and is
46 dependent primarily upon funding
47 from synods and the national
48 church, supplemented by
49 contributions from alumni and
50 friends; and
51 WHEREAS, the
core funding of
52 campus ministry provided by the
53 synods of the state of Minnesota
54 and a churchwide grant is
55 generous but has been unable to
56 keep up with the basic needs of
57 these ministries;
58 THEREFORE, BE
IT RESOLVED
59 that the Southeastern Minnesota
60 Synod of the ELCA designate
61 2007 for special recognition and
62 celebration of Lutheran Campus
63 Ministry within the synod; and
64 BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that
65 the Southeastern Minnesota Synod
66 of the ELCA, at its 2007
67 Assembly, celebrate the 100th
68 Anniversary of Lutheran Campus
69 Ministry, including but not limited
70 to:
71 • A recognition of our campus
72 ministries during the opening
73 festival of the Eucharist
74 • A session dedicated to campus
75 ministry during one of the
76 breakout or workshop times
77 with the Campus Ministries from
78 the synod providing coordination
79 and resources for these and other
80 activities that may be deemed
81 appropriate; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the
Southeastern Minnesota Synod
Assembly take a special offering at
the 2006 assembly for Lutheran
Campus Ministry of Minnesota; and
82 BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that a
83 special offering - designated for
84 Lutheran Campus Ministry of
85 Minnesota - be received at each of
86 the Minnesota synod assemblies,
87 with each congregation of the
88 synod encouraged to contribute a
89 meaningful and substantial gift of
90 celebration and thanksgiving to
91 God, in recognizing God's gift of a
92 century of Lutheran Campus
93 Ministry in what is now the
94 Evangelical Lutheran Church in
95 America.
