Big debate during lunch
By Rev. Scott Olson
In an unexpected turn of
events, the most hotly debated issue of the assembly occurred during
Saturday’s lunch. Lunch workers were observed inciting voting member as they
entered the lunch line. “What color Jell-o do you think ought to be served,
red or green?” As can be expected when Lutherans gather for the traditional
potluck with casseroles, opinions were as numerous as noses.
Some noted that the color
ought to match the current color of the church year, which means green would
be the color of the day. Even so, Bishop Usgaard’s wife, Lynette, was
overheard lamenting the lack of red Jell-o in her particular line.
Apparently the bishop and his wife are able to maintain peace in spite of
this divisive issue. Clearly we are living into becoming a “big tent”
church.
Finally, some voting members
were able to remain calm when the requisite bars ran out and chocolate chip
cookies were substituted instead. The presence of comfort food no doubt
softened the blow. Even so, all in all the meal was a success and sustained
the assembly for final leg of the church’s work.
