Gather a few Lutherans together to conduct their business and without a doubt a meal will be included. The Synod Assembly attendees enjoyed cena, a Colombian evening meal on Friday evening and a Tanzanian lunch on Saturday. These meals became a connection for assembly members to the synod’s Global Mission/Companion Synods: Central Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Colombia. The cena meal consisted of simply-prepared fish and beef served with rice, a Colombian corn bread called arepas, fried plantains, and rice pudding. Many who dined on the Colombian meal commented on how simply the meat and fish were prepared with no sauce or seasoning and the bread being much dryer than we are accustomed to. The Tanzanian meal consisted of rice topped with chicken baked in a slightly seasoned broth, red beans, orange slices, bananas and an item called ugali. Ugali, which was highly recommended by Bishop Usgaard, translates to corn meal porridge. On one’s plate, ugali vaguely resembled a golf ball, white and somewhat dimpled. It, too, is noticeably unseasoned. Some diners felt the ugali tasted a little more agreeable by adding it to their chicken and rice! |
