Thanksgiving and Encouragement for Hunger Response

1 WHEREAS, the scripture says,"Give
2 liberally and be ungrudging when
3 you do so, for on this account the
4 Lord your God will bless you in
5 all your work and in all that you
6 undertake. Since there will never
7 cease to be some in need on the
8 earth, I therefore command you,
9 'Open your hand to the poor and
10 needy neighbor in your land.'"
11 (Deuteronomy 15:10-11); and

12 WHEREAS, the congregations of the
13 Southeastern Minnesota Synod
14 during 2008 under the theme, "A
15 Synod at Table with the Hungry",
16 contributed $625,346 to the ELCA
17 World Hunger Appeal, local food
18 shelves, and numerous other
19 hunger-related charitable
20 organizations as together we
21 sought to reach the $1,000,000
22 challenge; and

23 WHEREAS, hunger and poverty
24 related issues continue to be
25 pressing needs during these
26 challenging economic times;

27 THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,
28 that individuals and congregations
29 be thanked and commended for
30 their generous offering of gifts
31 toward hunger-related programs
32 during this year of our special
33 emphasis, "A Synod at Table with
34 the Hungry"; and

35 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that
36 individuals and congregations be
37 encouraged to continue their
38 efforts through on-going
39 contributions during this year to
40 the ELCA World Hunger Appeal
41 and the appeals of other hunger-
42 related organizations seeking to
43 reach beyond our 2008 goal; and

44 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that
45 increased efforts be made to
46 educate and to develop advocacy
47 participation through the work of
48 Lutheran Coalition for Public
49 Policy in Minnesota and in support
50 of "A Minnesota Without Poverty"
51 movement.
