Taking Root – Hunger Causes/Hunger Hopes

1 WHEREAS, the Scripture says,
2 "Happy are those whose help is
3 the God of Jacob, whose hope is in
4 the Lord their God, who made
5 heaven and earth, the sea and all
6 that is in them; who keeps faith
7 forever; who executes justice for
8 the oppressed; who gives food to
9 the hungry." Psalm 146: 5-7
10 WHEREAS, the Southeastern
11 Minnesota Synod traditionally has
12 generously responded to the ELCA
13 World Hunger Appeal, which
14 addresses both domestic and
15 global hunger; and
16 WHEREAS, during 2008 under the
17 theme, "A Synod at Table with the
18 Hungry," $431,753 was
19 contributed (includes individuals,
20 congregations and synod) toward
21 the ELCA World Hunger Appeal;
22 and
23 WHEREAS, hunger will end when,
24 and only when, the human family
25 changes the way it understands
26 hunger and poverty and defines it
27 as both unacceptable and solvable;
28 and
29 WHEREAS, ongoing education for all
30 age levels and increased advocacy
31 are important for eliminating
32 hunger and poverty; and
33 WHEREAS, Taking Root: Hunger
34 Causes/Hunger Hopes, a new
35 educational curriculum with
36 materials for grades 3-6, junior
37 high (7-9), and senior high (10-12)
38 is now available through the
39 ELCA;
40 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,
41 that congregational education
42 committees be encouraged to order
43 the free Taking Root introductory
44 packet and free sample kits for
45 each grade level from Augsburg
46 Fortress Publishers; and
47 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that
48 congregations of the Southeastern
49 Minnesota Synod be encouraged to
50 include Taking Root: Hunger
51 Causes/Hunger Hopes curriculum
52 as part of their youth educational
53 materials.
