Glen Stassen, Keynote Glen Stassen

Glen Stassen was inspired by his father, Harold Stassen, former governor of Minnesota (1939-1943), to work towards peace. He has since developed Ten Practices of Just Peacemaking in an effort to ­stems from the challenge to follow his father’s example.

Stassen is the author of Living the Sermon on the Mount (Jossey Bass: July, 2006), and editor of Just Peacemaking: The New Paradigm for the Ethics of Peace and War (Pilgrim Press: 1998/2004/2008); author of Just Peacemaking: Transforming Initiatives for Justice and Peace (Westminster/John Knox: 1992), and Kingdom Ethics: Following Jesus in Contemporary Context, with David Gushee (InterVarsity, 2003), which won the Christianity Today Award for Best Book of 2004 in Theology or Ethics.

He is Lewis B. Smedes Professor of Christian Ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, Calif., where he won the All Seminary Council Faculty Award for Outstanding Community Service to Students. At Berea College, he won the Seabury Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Rev. Stephen Bouman, Bible StudyRev. Stephen Bouman

The Rev. Dr. Stephen Paul Bouman was called to the position of Executive Director for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Evangelical Outreach and Congregational Mission unit in February, 2008. He previously served as bishop of the Metropolitan New York Synod for almost twelve years.

Bouman’s pastoral ministry included several congregations in New York and New Jersey. He is founder of the Diakonia ministry education program, which trains lay people for ministry in local congregations. His parish ministry also included building strong multicultural outreach, the launching of two parochial schools, and a variety of ministries of assistance and advocacy among the poor. He also served as Chair of the ELCA Board of The Division for Higher Education and Schools.

Bouman has published a number of scholarly articles, books, curricula and devotionals. Two recent books are Grace All Around Us (2007) and the soon-to-be-released They Are Us: Lutherans and Immigration, co-authored with Ralston Deffenbaugh.

Stan Noffsinger, Special GuestStan Noffsinger

Stanley J. Noffsinger was called as the General Secretary of the Church of the Brethren in March 2003. The General Secretary serves as the head of the denomination’s primary ministry and administrative arm and represents the Church of the Brethren ecumenically. He currently serves as vice president at-large for the National Council of Churches of Christ; member of the board of directors of the US Conference World Council of Churches; member of the president’s circle of Religions for Peace USA; and member of the Anabaptist Council of Moderators and Secretaries.

Prior to his calling, Noffsinger spent the previous four years as Executive Director of the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Md. His work included oversight of the Emergency Response/Service Ministries program as well as the larger ministry of the center and its partners.

Originally from Pennsylvania, Noffsinger also served at the Brethren Service Center in the mid-1970s, as regional director of the Church World Service CROP office.
