Resolution 2007-04:
‘A River of Giving’ to the World
Hunger Appeal
Passed
WHEREAS, the Prophet Isaiah
promised that blessing would
follow justice and mercy:
“Is not this the fast that I
choose: to loose the bonds
of injustice, to undo the
thongs of the yoke, to let
the oppressed go free, and
to break every yoke? Is it
not to share your bread
with the hungry, and bring
the homeless poor into
your house; when you see
the naked, to cover them,
and not to hide yourself
from your own kin? Then
your light shall break forth
like the dawn, and your
healing shall spring up
quickly; your vindicator
shall go before you, the
glory of the LORD shall be
your rear guard …” Isaiah
58:6-8 NRSV; and
WHEREAS, the focus of the 2008
Southeastern Minnesota Synod
Assembly will be “Ending
Hunger”; and
WHEREAS, the ELCA World Hunger
Appeal is our primary effort for
addressing both domestic and
global hunger; and
WHEREAS, if every baptized ELCA
member gave $5 to the ELCA
World Hunger Appeal, the church
would reach its goal of raising $25
million for its efforts to end
hunger around the world and close
to home; and
WHEREAS, the most recent statistics
indicate that $19.1 million was
given in 2006 by congregations
and individuals of the ELCA; and
WHEREAS, in 2006 our Southeastern
Minnesota Synod contributed
$330,222 (includes individuals,
congregation and synod) toward
the ELCA World Hunger Appeal
(including “Stand with Africa”)
which averages $2.51 per baptized
member;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,
that members of all congregations
in the Southeastern Minnesota
Synod be challenged to increase
their giving to the ELCA World
Hunger Appeal by $1.00 per
baptized member in 2007 and an
additional $1.00 per baptized
member in 2008 which would lift
this synod’s giving to the Hunger
Appeal to over $500,000 by the
end of 2008; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that
such generous outpouring of gifts
through our synod’s “River of
Giving Emphasis” be a means of
expressing our gratitude for all the
gifts we have received from our
Lord and on behalf of the needs of
the hungry and impoverished.

Synod Hunger Task Force, Rev. Clark Cary, Chair
